Harvesting Wild Rice: The Poetry + The Process

September 30, 2013June 25, 2021

The Initial Daydream This August I fulfilled a long haunting dream of mine – to harvest rice in the wild beds of Minnesota. The idea began as a simple seed in my early twenties. I was idealistic, entranced with the world and still exploring the ideas of living close to the land, harvesting the natural nourishment…

This is why I created Business as a Spiritual Jour This is why I created Business as a Spiritual Journey. A business course made specifically to help my fellow sensitives and empaths flourish on the path of entrepreneurship.🌹 (And why I made it nearly 40% off until Thursday). Inside the course, we focus on crafting a business that is sustainable, not just financially, but *energetically*—one that supports you in becoming more of yourself, not less. 👉 Comment “Journey” to learn more about the course Because as a sensitive person, you are here to change the world—first by coming home to your own inner world. And from there, entirely new, gentler, more attuned ways of being can reseed our Earth. 🌱
I was sitting in a cedar tub looking at the stars I was sitting in a cedar tub looking at the stars the other night when I had a thought. Or really, it was more like a remembrance. Each year around my daughter’s birthday, I take myself away for a night. I book a quiet Airbnb so I can slow down, reflect, and feel into my own energetic contours again. As I sank into the tub, I realized I was holding a huge swirl of feelings inside me —
leftover stress from the whole family being sick,
the to-do lists of preparing for an incoming winter storm,
a deep, aching grief over what is unfolding in our country right now. I was brimming with intensity and overwhelm. But then a voice drifted through me, reminding me of something that — even as a highly sensitive person who teaches other sensitives — I sometimes forget: Sensitive people need to do things differently. 🌷 I wasn’t broken. I wasn’t defective. I was just trying to hold, manage, and engage with life in the way everyone else does. And it wasn’t working. Because as sensitive people, we need to do things differently. More slowly.
More deeply.
More thoughtfully. So if you’re feeling broken or defective today, just know — you’re probably sensitive too. And there is so much you are here to do to help the world.
🌹You just may need to do things differently.
Over the past 14 years of running my own businesse Over the past 14 years of running my own businesses—and guiding thousands of kindred entrepreneurs—I’ve come to understand that businesses have their own weather. Seasons and snowstorms that aren’t problems to fix,
But invitations into entirely new ways of seeing. If you’re a fellow sensitive or empathic business owner, and you’ve been struggling with roadblocks, ice slips, or snowdrifts in your work— Grab your headphones this weekend and tune into my new podcast episode: 🎧 👉 Your Business Is Your Spirit Guide It’s a sweet, enlightening reframe (with a short, guided meditation) that I created to help you receive a completely refreshed perspective on your work. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts—or comment “Guide” and I’ll send you the link. 💌
School is cancelled. Plans go out the window. Th School is cancelled. Plans go out the window. The world becomes soft and round as a feather quilt. Sound moves slower. Even the light is different—purer, kinder. On a bright day of snow the sun seems to enter the windows of my house like a soul. 🪟 When we simply allow the weather that rolls into our life to be what it is, we open a sacred window in which to see things differently. And that difference can be so profoundly freeing. I hope everyone who is in the line of snow (or ice) feels snuggled in and safe today. 🤍 We’re still waiting to see just how much ice is coming, and what that will mean for the week ahead. Sending love
I’ve got a busy day ahead of me. Filling the bath I’ve got a busy day ahead of me. Filling the bathtub with water.
Making sure the woodpile is stocked.
Gathering up all the candles I have sprinkled around the house— A winter storm is officially en route to the mountains…And it sounds like this one is going to touch a lot of us. 🌨️ I used to get a lot more nervous about weather events like this. We live up a steep gravel road in Appalachia, and it doesn’t take much for it to become completely impassable. But then—I got snowed in on the mountain when I was in labor with my daughter. And a few years later, we lived through Hurricane Helene. So now I feel a bit like a weather mage. 🧙🏻‍♀️ Not because I know how to control what’s coming—
But because I’ve learned how to be in relationship with the weather. To surrender to the change and allow whatever comes to change me. It’s a lifelong practice, meeting what is. I am always learning. And weather is one of Earth’s best teachers. If you’re somewhere in the path of this storm,
I’m sending love, steadiness, candles, and warmth for the days ahead. 🤍
Stay safe out there.
I honestly could fill a book with things my busine I honestly could fill a book with things my business has taught me over these years. Which is exactly why I created ✨Business as a Spiritual Journey—and why I’m putting the entire course on sale (at nearly 40% OFF) for the next week. Business as a Spiritual Journey is a nervous-system-anchored, soul-honoring container for my fellow sensitives and empaths who are ready to flourish on the path of entrepreneurship.
